It’s September 2022 and I’d like to catch up and re-engage with those interested in me, our circles and community needs. But first some backstory~
In March of 2020 I was teaching at Dusty Strings per usual. Adam, myself and several other teachers were just a room away from each other. Unknowingly, Adam’s choir had just had the devastating rehearsal the night before, where several members caught Covid, including Adam and his wife. This was one of the first outbreaks in WA. This was also the last time I was at Dusty Strings. Within 4 weeks I was set up to teach using a technology I’d not heard of till then. Zoom. I’ve been on line ever since and have just recently been let go from Dusty Strings teaching roster as they don’t support singing, Still.
These past weeks I’ve been updating my website. It only seemed fair to include my singing using Zoom, an app called Acapella and TikTok during the restrictions that Covid caused. These videos range from odd to deeply moving. You can decide. I simply want to be honest about my continued engagement with sound and those that make it. From Roma to Canada, I’ve made friends that use the same improvisational structures as we do while Circle Singing. Zoom accommodated some connection and release during the troubling months during Covid’s worst. For this I’m grateful.
Last month, I went to Berkeley, CA to join 100 invested singers and movers to work with Bobby McFerrin, Rhiannon and about 10 other improvisational instructors from around the globe. This was a scary commitment as heading to Costco had nearly been my biggest outing since 2020. The entire week all singers and movers remained masked while inside. This was a first time singing-masked for me. It was hot and tiring but what I came away with was, “It’s more important to be singing than not.” I felt that whatever protections are put into place for gatherings are worth the effort. I just can’t go back to nothing.
Presently, I’m looking into resonate spaces between Seattle and Olympia. Please let me know if you have any great spaces to consider! #quietnomore. This brings me to the idea of opening my own Tacoma Voice Studio for very small gatherings. The connections and stories we share are as valuable as the music we make together.
I do so hope you are well and managing as best as you’re able. I look forward to coming together and understanding your stories and sounds soon.
