Adaptive Music Lessons Patient and engaged adaptive learning can achieve miraculous results and very happy humans!
Students of any age can engage in music! This applies to singing or playing the piano. Humans are drawn towards music out of a desire to express ourselves as well as to share our music with others. I want my students to experience joy, as well as to gain a sense of personal success. Therefore, my Studio is student centered, with patient instruction as an integral element. Our time together is as much about our relationship as it is about the student's relationship to music. Each student's process is deeply personal and built upon trust. Intuitive lessons exhibit as work well done but feel like play to the learner. This keeps students invested in our time together and allows them to see themselves as musicians quickly.
In the beginning, a student's lesson might depend primarily on their attributes such as: cultural sound profiles and vocabulary, body memory, technique, mood and interests in exploration, as well as their willingness to take risks while enjoying themselves in the process. Individual advances are nurtured through mutual respect with careful attention towards the exploration of physical accessibility, aptitude, interest and familial support. I gauge each session by watching and listening to the student's progress, then move into the lesson with openness using clear directives and examples. Each student proceeds through the highly individualized lessons at their own pace. I teach in a "global" fashion, therefore all students come to understand the importance of body awareness, technique, theory, listening/ear training, co-operative playing/singing and improvisation, which helps students to understand how they relate universally, one to the other. Growth will exhibit itself through the student's ability to sing and/or play piano, explore rhythm and free improvisation and composition. Patient and engaging intuitive learning can achieve miraculous results and very happy humans! Adaptive Voice & Early Piano: Saturday's Voice studio is my dream child. I've been teaching Adaptive Voice & Early Piano to students with special needs since 2012. Employed by Tacoma's Public School District for nearly 20 years in the field of special education, I returned to school earning my Master of Fine Art-Interdisciplinary Art degree in improvisation/performance art and composition. Equipped to work with students of varying abilities, I now teach a student-centered adaptive program based on each individuals' cognitive and physical abilities. Inherent to my teaching is improvisation, where I find the creative space that all can playfully explore and learn more about music and themselves. Often times I use the Step-by-Step Piano Reading book series by Dr. Kendall Becherer. This book is a tool for teachers and parents to introduce piano note reading using small steps. It is designed to be used with the guidance of more experienced pianists (parents & teachers) who can decide how quickly or slowly a certain student should progress through the book.
